Abstract

Moment in the Sun captures the mind of an aging cow released from a factory farming operation. The question antagonizing this piece is “What if factory farming was banned completely in North America?”, with influencing ideas from the question “What if farm animal consciousness was no longer doubted, giving these species the same rights as common household pets?”

Through the implied perspective of a cow, the piece affirms the idea that cows are able to think and feel, to suffer, grieve and hope just as we are as humans. The inability of cows to explain to us that they have rich and meaningful lives should not be evidence used to exploit them under our harmful Western capitalist systems.
