Abstract

My ideas around factory farming stem from a dire need to see change in how we treat farm animals and our bodies, a perspective first inspired by readings in ENGL 150. This project imagines a world where individuals can consume animal products in more ethical ways and draws from Indigenous and Queer teachings that centre community and resistance. My intention with this piece is to shift cynical views on the industrialization of farming, to ones of radical hope by including real changes our communities can make.

Author Biography

Charlene Benipal

My name is Charlene (she/her) and I am completing my Bachelor's of Science with a double major in Microbiology and Cultural Studies at UBCO. I grew up on the unceded land of the Stó:lō people, where my family is fortunate enough to maintain a garden that lets me show appreciation by sharing food. I moved to the Sylix (Okanagan) five years ago and fell in love with the lakes and queer communities here. Alongside my studies, I am working as a burlesque dancer and use my art as advocacy for animal welfare and community engagement.
