Abstract

This piece represents the contradictory feelings that come along with “growing up”. We are always told that we need to live up to some version of ourselves or expectations for our lives. I wanted to play with what it means to grow up and the directions and sensations we attribute to it. It struck me that life is more akin to a downward direction because it refers to depth and a sense of not being able to turn back or “unknow”. I flipped it on its head at the end by making it almost a circular experience compounded on itself, more than it is a slow doomed descent or upwards evolution. This poem relates to the theme, because of the ending. Maybe we are not so stuck on the path. What if we are always in a process of learning, a process of returning?
