Abstract

Citizenship education is found across diverse societies and varies by time and context. While there can be similarities in views of citizenship education, such as viewing citizenship education as the learning of bonds individuals share in a community, it is the unique interplay of time and place that create specific forms and conceptions of citizenship education. The five papers in this edition illustrate this close interweaving of context and citizenship. One of the central themes to emerge from the papers of this edition is that of the significance of place to learning and engaging with citizenship. Land-based, or ecological citizenship, is a key means of promoting identity and connection. We welcome you to read and engage with these papers as they explore the nature of citizenship and citizenship education in Canada and internationally.
