Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand the links between geography teaching and citizenship education and how geography teaching contributes to citizenship education in Turkey. To achieve this, the geography curriculum was first analyzed, and then geography teachers were interviewed. Phenomenology, a qualitative research design, was employed in the study. The results reveal that geography teaching in Turkey plays a significant instrumental role in the construction of national and global citizenship, but teachers emphasize national citizenship more prominently. Active citizenship, especially associated with environmental issues, was highlighted. Teachers believe that there is a relationship between geography and citizenship education, but they do not see themselves as citizenship educators.
