Abstract

Citizenship Education has a rich tradition and place in many societies and is closely interweaved with the development of public schooling and nation-states in Western nations. After reviewing the relevant context of the close relationship between citizenship education and public schooling, this paper discusses the findings of a research study with Canadians that explores their ideas of identity and citizenship in Canada. The paper concludes with implications for teaching and learning, developed from the findings.
